Tour No. 8
Manipur-khonoma-mishmi hills-kaziranga
**Day 1: Arrival at Imphal Airport, Manipur**
Our NE India birding adventure begins upon arrival at Imphal Airport in Manipur. We will spend the first night of our tour at a nearby resort.
**Day 2: Manipur**
Today, we will search for some special bird species, including the Spot-breasted Scimitar-Babbler, Spot-breasted, Blue-winged, Striped & Moustached Laughingthrushes, Rusty-capped Fulvetta, and a few other surprises. The Yellow-throated Laughingthrush will be our primary target.
**Day 3: Imphal – Khonoma, Nagaland**
We will have a final morning for birding before setting out on the long drive to Khonoma village in Nagaland.
**Day 4: Khonoma, Nagaland**
In Khonoma, we will explore the Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary, a safe haven for wildlife due to traditional hunting bans. Our main targets include the Indian endemic Naga Wren-Babbler, Blyth’s Tragopan, Hodgson’s Frogmouth, and a variety of Laughingthrush species. We will also visit Chizami, a newly discovered hotspot, where we may encounter Yellow-throated Laughingthrush, Black-tailed Crake, and the elusive Blue-naped Pitta.
Other species to search for include the Mountain Bamboo-Partridge, Mountain Hawk-Eagle, Crested Goshawk, and numerous others like the Rusty-capped Fulvetta, Silver-eared Mesia, and the Crested Finchbill.
**Day 5: Khonoma – Tinsukhia**
After some final birding in Nagaland, we will drive to Tinsukhia, Assam, for an overnight stay.
**Day 6: Digboi – Roing, Mishmi Hills, Arunachal Pradesh**
In the morning, we will visit the special lowland forested area of Digboi, searching for Chestnut-backed Laughingthrush, Rufous-necked Laughingthrush, and the rare White-winged Duck. We will also visit the Maguri Grasslands, home to species like Jerdon’s Babbler, Marsh Babbler, and the elusive Black-breasted Parrotbill. In the evening, we will head to our accommodation near Roing at the base of the Mishmi Hills.
**Days 7 – 9: Mishmi Hills**
Over the next three days, we will explore the remote Mishmi Hills, focusing on the Mishmi Wren-Babbler and other key species such as Blyth’s Tragopan, Rufous-necked Hornbill, Ward’s Trogon, and Beautiful Nuthatch. The area also harbors species like Gould’s Shortwing, Fire-tailed Myzornis, and a variety of Himalayan specialities, including the Himalayan Red-flanked and White-browed Bush-robins, Black-faced and Spotted Laughingthrushes, and Crimson-browed Finches.
We will bird the lush primary forests at various elevations, and expect to see mixed-species flocks and several unique birds like Common Hill-Partridge, Fulvous Parrotbill, and Mrs Gould’s Sunbird.
**Day 10: Mishmi Hills – Tinsukhia**
We will spend the day exploring lower elevations for species still needed before driving back to Tinsukhia for an overnight stay.
**Day 11: Tinsukhia – Kaziranga**
Today, we will drive to our base for the next two nights at Kaziranga.
**Days 12 – 13: Kaziranga National Park**
We will embark on four jeep safaris within Kaziranga National Park, exploring a variety of habitats including grasslands, riverine forests, marshes, and ox-bow lakes. The park is home to the famous Indian One-horned Rhinoceros, along with other mammals like Wild Water Buffalo, Indian Elephant, and Swamp Deer. Other mammals we may see include Rhesus Macaque, Langurs, Sambar, and the elusive Tigers and Leopards.
Kaziranga is also known for its remarkable birdlife. Key species include the Spot-billed Pelican, numerous herons, Black-necked Storks, and a variety of waders such as the Pied Avocet and Pacific Golden Plover. We’ll also look for the rare Bengal Florican, along with Himalayan Griffon, White-rumped Vultures, and several species of cuckoos and hornbills.
**Day 14: Kaziranga – Guwahati Airport**
We will leave Kaziranga in the morning to reach Guwahati Airport, where the tour will conclude later in the day.
